Here are some of the state regulations for the Tennessee Alcohol Certification: 
  • Training must be completed within 30 days of hire
  • 18 years of age is the minimum age to sell
  • 3 hours of training required
  • 80% is the minimum passing score on the final exam
  • There are unlimited exam retakes
  • Certification renewal is required every 3 years 
  • As part of Tennessee's specialized process; additional PPI is collected
  • $15 Background fee

To obtain a Tennessee TABC Server Permit, you must: 

  • Be at least 18 years old 
  • Complete a TABC-certified alcohol awareness program within one year of applying 
  • Submit an application through the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission's RLPS portal or the MyTN App 
  • Pay a $20 application fee 

You must obtain a server permit within 61 days of starting to serve at an establishment. The permit is valid for five years and is not transferable. 

You must also meet the following requirements: 

  • You cannot have a felony conviction for an offense related to your fitness to practice 
  • You cannot have a conviction for any crime related to the sale of alcohol, beer, controlled substances, or sex-related crimes 
  • If the establishment permits smoking, you must be at least 21 years old
