Become a Member of the Always Food Safe SME Council

Always Food Safe is actively recruiting food safety professionals who are willing to serve on the Always Food Safe Subject Matter Expert (SME) Council. The purpose of the SME Council is to undertake the technical work required for developing and maintaining Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) exam materials. 

*At the end of this page, is a link to a short survey for interested parties to fill out. This provides us with some demographic information so that we make sure to properly represent the food service industry*

Opportunities to serve on the SME Council

Job Task Analysis subcommittee - is responsible for:

  • Identifying and rating tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for those working in the Food Service industry
  • Work with other SME's to define what tasks are most vital to doing the job of a Food Protection Manager

Test Item Development and Review subcommittee - is responsible for:

  • Develop test items and ensure content accuracy
  • Review written Test Items for fairness and clarity
  • Aligning test items with learning objectives and exam blueprint

Standard Setting - is responsible for:

  • Occasionally review new forms to identify an appropriate pass rate based on what a minimally viable candidate would need to start working.

Estimated duration and frequency of time commitment:

Job Task Analysis subcommittee - 3-month project schedule (Targeting May 2024 through January 2025) involving:

  • Attending an orientation call where the JTA process will be outlined
  • Fill out a questionnaire about the tasks needed to do the job of a food protection manager
  • Provide feedback on a final task list after the general population of food protection managers has been surveyed
  • Provide feedback on the exam blueprint developed from the list of tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities identified

Test Item Writing and Review subcommittee - Based on item writing frequency (25 items for 2024):

  • Learn how to write using best practices in test development
  • Write pilot items for inclusion in future Food Handler, Allergen Awareness, and Food Protection Manager certification exams
